Target settles with banks over 2013 data breach

Target has agreed to pay $39.4 million to banks and credit unions which sued to recoup money spent protecting customers in the wake of the retailer's late 2013 data breach. The agreement covers all financial institutions that reissued payment debit and credit cards, and which did not previously release their claims against Target. The preliminary settlement was filed on Dec. 2 with the U.S. District Court in St. Paul, Minnesota, and requires court approval.
