Relationships, referrals play outsize role in Wageman’s successRose Wageman’s LinkedIn bio is as simple as can be: “First Eagle Bank May 1984 to present.” With the exception of a few months during bank-owner transitions, Wageman has worked with Joel and Andy Salk her entire 43 years in banking..Upon graduation from Northern Illinois University, Wageman started as a management trainee in bookkeeping with River Oaks Bank in Calumet City, Ill., then owned by the Salk family. Half a year later, she moved to lending. “That’s where I fell in love with banking,” she said.After the Salks sold that bank, they were part of an investor group that purchased what is now First Eagle Bank in Chicago. “When we ended up buying this bank, [Rose] was really the first person we called and asked to join us, recognizing the role that she has often played at the bank,” said Andy Salk, bank president and CEO.When Wageman initially joined First Eagle, “some people at the new bank might just have assumed that Rose was treated special because she’s worked with us all these years,” Salk said. “[The] reality is ... she really wasn’t given anything.”During her tenure, she has worked her way through nearly every department of the bank, which she believes is part of her secret sauce. “I think it makes me very effective—I know why we’re doing something,” she said. The bank also offers “a tremendous amount of opportunity for those who want it,” she said. “I’m a firm believer that the more you know, the more valuable you are.”Wageman is being recognized as one of BankBeat’s “Outstanding Women in Banking” for 2026. Wageman is not just an outstanding woman in banking. Salk emphasized she is an outstanding banker.She is now executive vice president, chief lending officer, and a bank director. “She’s earned all of that and more,” Salk said. “Since acquiring the bank in 1991, we have grown assets of $31.5 million to over $660 million today, and our capital has grown from $5 million to over $130 million. Rose has and continues to be an instrumental reason for our success.”Salk also attributes a significant portion of the bank’s 2026 pre- tax ROAA of 2.34 percent to Wageman. “She has that kind of perspective and hands-on experience that is just invaluable in terms of understanding the day-to-day nuances of the bank, and, in particular, the loan department.”She also continues to bring in a significant amount of business. Wageman is quick, however, to acknowledge the role that her colleagues play in the financial institution’s overall success.“When people talk about the bank, they’re not talking about the bank,” Wageman said. “They’re talking about the banker.” The relationships, and seeing customers succeed, are what have kept her in banking all these years.Wageman emphasizes, however, that she is not in sales. “When I was in college, I never even considered marketing or a career in sales. As an introvert, that intimidated me. Had I known that a lender was like a sales position, I may never have gone into banking,” she said. Her point of view is “why wouldn’t someone want to bank with us? I truly think we’re that special.”She mentioned a recent customer who had gone to a larger bank that couldn’t help him. He was referred to First Eagle. He was so impressed, she said, that he continued his business with the bank, and they are now closing a $10 million loan. “Every day, I’m getting a call” from someone who was referred to the bank, she said.Wageman does what she does because she is passionate about helping people. In the bank, “we’re always open to promoting career growth,” she said. One young credit analyst is now pursuing his MBA, paid for by the bank, and will “morph” into portfolio management. A former employee was a shy bookkeeper who was moved throughout the bank to get experience. “She is now vice president of a bank in Rockford. It’s rewarding to mentor someone and help them grow their careers,” she said. On the flip side, some of that growth is to help employees understand the other side of the ledger. “When we have a credit analyst, we make them come over to lending for a few weeks to see how things work there.”Wageman attributes her overall success to her deep affection for the bank, its staff, and its customers. The Salks have been a great family to work for, the bank is financially sound, and it has been ranked one of the best places to work in Chicago, she said. “My success has been [because] I care about the bank a lot. I care about what I do,” Wageman said. “I‘ve just been very fortunate that I landed into a career so early that I wanted to do and ended up loving it. That’s a luxury.”
