Professional basketball player Harrison Barnes is coming closer to acquiring Paton, Iowa-based Community State Bank. .The vast majority of Community State Bank shareholders recently approved selling to the organization Barnes owns, Barnes and Company. Former Iowa Superintendent of Banking Jeff Plagge recently became board chair of the $42.8 million Community State Bank. According to Plagge's LinkedIn page, he is also a member of Barnes Bancorp. Barnes, 34, has been a bank director twice, for Triumph Bancorp, Inc., Dallas, since 2021 and Ames, Iowa-based First National Bank from 2020-23. He founded Barnes Bancorp in January. He completed the first year of the two-year Iowa School of Banking program last year.Barnes has Iowa roots, graduating from Ames High School in 2010 as one of the state’s most accomplished high school basketball players. He played basketball for the University of North Carolina Tar Heels before being drafted in the first round by the Golden State Warriors in 2012. He then joined the Dallas Mavericks from 2016-19, before becoming a member of the Sacramento Kings from 2019-24. He has since played for the San Antonio Spurs.
