The average return on assets ratio fell to 0.97 percent from 1.25 percent, but increased from the second quarter's 0.36 percent. At community banks, NIM decreased to 3.27 percent from 3.51 percent in the second quarter and 3.68 percent a year ago. Average ROA ticked up to 1.18 percent from 1.13 in the prior quarter..Total loans and leases declined by $84.5 billion (0.8 percent) from the previous quarter, but grew by 4.9 percent compared to a year prior. Community banks, however, reported positive loan growth of 1 percent in that time..Noncurrent loans increased by $9.3 billion (7.9 percent) in third quarter 2020. The noncurrent rate for total loans increased by 9 basis points, to 1.17 percent, less than the previous quarter's 14 basis point increase. Net charge-offs declined by $418 million (3.2 percent) from a year ago.
