First Business Bank’s Corey Chambas devotes career to people-oriented banking

Corey Chambas was an executive lender with regional powerhouse M&I Bank in 1993, managing a loan portfolio with more than $100 million in it. Yielding to the persuasion of First Business Bank founder Jerry Smith, Chambas left M&I that year to join Smith’s staff of 18 people at the 3-year-old, $50 million bank. In what could only be politely called a lateral move, the job switch ended up being one of the best decisions Chambas has ever made, as today he prepares to retire as CEO of the bank and its holding company, First Business Financial Services, both based in Madison, Wis.
